Doctor refuses request as man seeks death certificate after wife left hospital and died at herbalist’s house

A Nigerian medical doctor has sparked discussion on social media after recounting an encounter with a man who sought a death certificate for his late wife despite her death not being certified by a medical professional.

In a post shared on X, the doctor explained that the man visited his facility to obtain the document needed for cemetery clearance.

However, a search of the hospital’s records revealed that the deceased woman was not registered as having died at the facility.

According to the doctor, the man admitted that his wife did not die in the hospital. He then narrated the events that led to her death.

The doctor said the woman had initially been brought to the hospital as an emergency case. After an assessment by the attending physician, she was referred to a teaching hospital for specialised treatment.

Patient Left Hospital Against Medical Advice

The woman was subsequently admitted to the teaching hospital, where she reportedly spent two days receiving care.

However, the doctor said she became uncomfortable with the situation at the facility and requested to leave.

According to the account, the patient told her family: “People are dying too much in the hospital. I want to go home.”

She was later discharged against medical advice and taken to a herbal treatment centre instead.

The doctor said the woman died approximately one week later while under the care of the herbalist.

Doctor Explains Why Certificate Could Not Be Issued

Following her death, the husband reportedly approached the hospital seeking a death certificate to facilitate burial arrangements.

The doctor said he declined the request, explaining that medical facilities cannot legally certify a death they did not witness or medically confirm.

He added that because the woman died outside a recognised healthcare facility and was not certified dead by a doctor, obtaining a death certificate through the hospital would not be possible.

The man was reportedly advised to seek legal guidance through the courts to resolve the matter.

Meanwhile, reflecting on the situation, the doctor wrote: “Imagine issuing a death certificate for a death you didn’t witness. That’s a career-ending risk.”
