A strong earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Mindanao in the southern Philippines on Monday. The quake triggered tsunami warnings in parts of the Philippines and Indonesia and led to evacuation alerts for people living near the coast.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres. Shallow earthquakes can cause stronger ground shaking and increase the risk of tsunamis. GFZ first estimated the quake at 7.3 magnitude, then revised it to 8.2 before finally confirming it at 7.8.
Tsunami Warnings Issued
After the earthquake, the US Tsunami Warning System warned that dangerous tsunami waves could affect nearby coastlines.
Indonesia’s Geophysics Agency also issued tsunami warnings for coastal areas in the country’s north-east and urged residents to stay alert and follow official advice.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said tsunami waves of more than one metre above normal tide levels could hit affected coastal areas.
Officials advised people in several southern provinces to move to higher ground or further inland immediately.
Is There a Risk of More Damage?
PHIVOLCS warned that the powerful earthquake could cause major damage and may be followed by strong aftershocks over the coming hours and days.
Emergency agencies across the region are closely monitoring sea levels and assessing the impact of the earthquake. Authorities continue to urge people in vulnerable coastal areas to stay alert and follow evacuation orders.
