A total of eight members of the House of Representatives officially defected from their political parties to new ones on Tuesday.
The defections were announced in separate letters of defection read on the floor of the House during plenary by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
This follows the resumption of plenary after the Easter break.
NewsWatch Nigeria reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), lost five members, one lawmaker left the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and the All Progressives Congress (APC) lost two members.
Speaking on the development, Kalu said the defections across party lines confirm that Nigeria is not moving towards a one-party state.
“This is to show the country that no party is stifled. People are leaving the majority party to the minority parties and the minority parties for the majority party. This is the beauty of democracy,” he said.
In his defection letter, Thaddeus Attah, who represents Eti-Osa Federal Constituency in Lagos State, left the Labour Party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He blamed his decision on the protracted leadership crisis which has engulfed the LP.
In the other defections, Abubakar Abdul from Niger State defected from the PDP to the APC, while Yakubu Noma from Kebbi State left the PDP for ADC and Ibrahim Mohammed, also from Kebbi State, moved to the APC from the PDP.
In Osun State, Mudashiru Alani (Ayedire/Iwo/Ola-Oluwa) and Adetunji Olusoji (Odo-Otin/Ifelodun/Boripe) left the PDP for the Accord Party.
NewsWatch Nigeria reports that David Fuoh (Taraba) defected from the APC to the PDP, while Bashir Zubair (Kaduna) joined the ADC from the APC.
Despite the latest realignments, the APC still maintains a numerical advantage in the House.
Meanwhile, the House adjourned plenary to Wednesday in honour of Kano lawmaker Hassan Danjuma, who died on April 10, 2026, at the age of 66.
