Europe’s football governing body, UEFA, has secured the backing of all 55 of its member associations for a potential boycott of FIFA competitions if the world football governing body moves ahead with plans to allow private investors to acquire stakes in its tournaments.
According to the BBC, the decision was reached during an emergency meeting convened after FIFA unveiled proposals earlier this week that could open its competitions to private investment. The move has drawn strong opposition from UEFA, which has repeatedly criticised the plan.

The proposed boycott would affect all FIFA-organised competitions, including the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cups as well as the FIFA Club World Cup, should FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s proposal receive approval from the organisation’s member associations.
The first major test of the standoff is expected in October, when the Women’s World Cup qualifying play-offs are scheduled to take place.
UEFA had earlier issued two strongly worded statements condemning the proposal, and the unanimous position adopted by its member associations reinforces Europe’s opposition to the plan.
