The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died while being held captive by bandits despite ongoing efforts to secure his release.
The announcement was made on Saturday in a statement by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasiru Mu’azu, who described the development as a painful loss for both Katsina State and the nation.
According to the government, the retired military officer died after battling health complications linked to diabetes and hypertension during his captivity.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various security agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” the statement read.

The state government said the late officer’s abduction and eventual death had dealt a devastating blow not only to his immediate family but also to Katsina State and Nigeria as a whole.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda was quoted in the statement as describing the incident as “a dark moment,” stressing that it underscored the urgent need for stronger collective action against banditry and other security threats confronting communities across the country.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure those behind the crime are apprehended and prosecuted.
“The Katsina State Government remains committed to working with the Federal Government and security forces to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice.
“We assure the citizens of Katsina State that our resolve to eliminate banditry and ensure the safety of all residents remains unshaken,” the statement added.
The government also extended its condolences to the family of the deceased retired general and prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.
The death of the former military officer has once again highlighted the persistent security challenges facing parts of northern Nigeria, where incidents of kidnapping and bandit attacks continue to pose significant threats to lives and livelihoods.
