The first batch of intending pilgrims from the Federal Capital Territory departed Abuja on Thursday, as the airlift for the 2026 Hajj formally commenced.
The FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, while bidding the 315 pilgrims farewell at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, stated that discipline, obedience and personal responsibility would determine the success of their journey.
She described the take-off of the inaugural flight as a significant step for the FCT’s Hajj operations this year, noting that preparations had focused on ensuring a smooth process from Abuja to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Mahmoud urged the pilgrims to approach the exercise with the seriousness it demands. “You should see yourselves as Allah’s guests. Remain steadfast in obedience to Allah, abide by the rules and regulations of both Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, and continue to pray for the peace, unity, and progress of our nation,” she said.
The minister also reminded the contingents that compliance with documentation requirements remains strict for the 2026 pilgrimage. She drew particular attention to the Nusuk card, describing it as mandatory for participation in Hajj activities. Losing it, she warned, could result in “serious inconveniences, including denial of access to Hajj activities.”
She acknowledged the role of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria and service provider Mashariq Al‑Dhahabiyya in getting the cards delivered ahead of schedule, calling it an improvement in the coordination of this year’s operations.
Mahmoud congratulated the pilgrims who completed the screening and orientation conducted by the FCT Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, noting that their “patience and determination reflected their readiness for the sacred journey.”
She also directed accompanying Hajj officials and support staff to prioritise welfare and ensure that challenges are addressed promptly throughout the exercise.
