The FCT Police Command has commenced an investigation into a confrontation between personnel of the Vehicle Inspection Office, VIO, and commercial motorcyclists in the Life Camp area of Abuja.
The incident occurred at about 7pm on Thursday, September 17, 2026, amid enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, on major roads and routes within the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the police, the confrontation began after a VIO personnel attached to a task force constituted by the FCT Administration to enforce the ban had an altercation with a commercial motorcyclist.
“The situation subsequently escalated into a confrontation,” the police said in a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh.
Adeh said the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The Command assures members of the public that further information will be made available as the investigation progresses,” the statement said.
The police said normalcy had since been restored in the area and urged residents to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities.
