President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has pledged that his administration will transform the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) into a modern capital city that mirrors Nigeria’s growing population and national ambitions.
The President gave the assurance on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, during the commissioning of the full-scope development of Arterial Road N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way), which connects Life Camp Junction to Ring Road III in Dape District, Abuja.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to infrastructure-led development. He said improved transport connectivity in the FCT would reduce logistics costs, attract investment, and create jobs.
He described infrastructure as a key indicator of national seriousness and state capacity.
“Infrastructure is the measure by which every civilised nation announces its seriousness.
“No capital can carry the weight of national ambition if its arteries are blocked by neglect, excuses and abandoned promises,” Tinubu said.
He assured Nigerians that his government remains resolute in transforming Abuja into a capital worthy of the federation — a model of planned urban development and a functional seat of government that matches the country’s aspirations.
“We will never rest until we have made the Federal Capital Territory not only a functional seat of government, but a capital worthy of our federation, our growing population and the dreams that brought Abuja into being,” he added.
President Tinubu noted that the road infrastructure inherited by his administration required sustained intervention.
He highlighted the government’s policy of continuity, saying there has been no break or pause in the construction and rehabilitation of inherited projects.
“That is why we have ended the tradition of abandoned projects and restored faith in the power of government to finish what it starts,” he said.
