The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved a compensation plan for Band A electricity customers who experienced low power supply between February and March 2026 due to shortfalls in generation across the national grid.
Naijaonpoint reports that in a notice released on Thursday, the regulator said the decision followed a drop in electricity generation in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry, which affected the ability of distribution companies to meet the required supply hours for some Band A feeders.
The commission explained that the situation was caused mainly by poor gas supply and damage to key gas and transmission facilities.
It said these problems were outside the control of distribution companies but still affected service delivery.
According to the plan, Band A feeders that still received between 18 and 20 hours of electricity daily will continue to be handled under the current compensation rules already in place.
For feeders that got less than 18 hours of power, the regulator said they will not be downgraded during the affected period. Instead, customers on those feeders will get compensation.
Non-MD customers will receive an amount equal to 20 percent of their approved energy cap for February 2026, while MD customers will receive 20 percent of their average billed energy for the same month.
Prepaid customers will get the benefit as token credits, while postpaid users will see adjustments in their bills.
The regulator also directed that compensation for February 2026 must be completed by May 31, 2026, while that of March 2026 must be concluded by June 30, 2026.
It further instructed distribution companies not to use the compensation to reduce existing customer debts and asked them to clearly inform customers about the value and period of the relief they receive.
