The Federal Government has approved another major redevelopment of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja as part of renewed efforts to upgrade sports infrastructure and reposition the sector for economic growth and youth development.
Naijaonpoint reports that the latest intervention, approved through the National Sports Commission, will involve a complete overhaul of the stadium’s main pitch and tartan tracks, alongside the upgrade of several critical facilities within the complex.
The redevelopment comes a few years after the stadium underwent a significant facelift between 2020 and 2022 under the Ministry of Sports’ Adopt-a-Pitch initiative, which was funded by billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote.
According to details released by the commission, the project will include the rehabilitation of dressing rooms, the media centre, VIP and corporate suites, public address systems, security infrastructure, cooling and heating facilities, as well as the restoration of the stadium’s roof membrane.
The Federal Government had earlier set aside ₦24.6 billion in the 2026 budget for broader structural rehabilitation of the facility through the NSC.
Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, said the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of using sports as a tool for youth empowerment, economic expansion and infrastructure development.
Dikko noted that the redevelopment would not only improve sporting facilities but also enhance the country’s ability to host major international competitions.
As part of the ambitious upgrade, the government will establish a High Performance Centre within the stadium complex.
The intervention will also see the conversion of the existing 200-bed athletes’ hostel into a hotel-style facility, rehabilitation of the swimming pool and the construction of two additional training pitches.
Plans are equally underway to install international-standard floodlights, electronic advertising boards and Video Assistant Referee technology.
The project will further provide anti-doping laboratories and improved sports medical facilities to meet global standards.
Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, described the initiative as a comprehensive sports ecosystem designed to strengthen talent discovery and development across the country.
According to him, the project is expected to create jobs, improve athlete development pathways and boost Nigeria’s competitiveness on the global sports stage.
In addition to the Abuja stadium redevelopment, the Federal Government has approved the construction of 20 mini sports centres across the country.
The centres are expected to promote grassroots sports development, increase youth participation in sporting activities and provide more opportunities for talent identification at the community level.
