The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD), the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) Project, and the Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) are advancing plans to launch the “Youths in Livestock Yoghurt Programme” as part of efforts to deepen Nigeria’s dairy value chain and expand youth participation in agribusiness.
The initiative was a key focus during a strategic meeting held at the L-PRES National Coordination Office in Abuja, where stakeholders aligned on programme delivery and sector priorities. Representing the National Project Coordinator, Dr. Sanusi Abubakar, the L-PRES Value Chain Consultant, Ms. Heather Ronke-Akanni, joined the Special Assistant to the Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Dr. Ishak Bello, to receive the DBN delegation.
Discussions centred on the programme’s objective to equip young Nigerians with the skills and support needed to establish sustainable yoghurt processing businesses, driving value addition within the livestock sector. According to officials, the intervention is designed to stimulate job creation and unlock new economic opportunities across the dairy ecosystem.
“The programme is targeted at empowering youths to participate meaningfully in dairy processing, particularly yoghurt production,” a participant noted, adding that it aligns with broader goals of strengthening local production capacity.
The meeting also reviewed preparations for the upcoming World Milk Day, with emphasis on boosting milk consumption, improving nutrition, and attracting investment into the dairy value chain.
The DBN delegation, led by Madam Ekene, PIU Manager, alongside Irene Azubuike, Assistant PIU Manager, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to financing and capacity development for livestock enterprises under the L-PRES framework, underscoring continued collaboration to drive sector growth.
