The Federal Government has donated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to three tertiary institutions in Kano State to ease transportation challenges faced by students as part of activities for the Democracy Day celebration.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the buses were donated to the Students’ Union leaders of the institutions on Friday in Kano, during a Democracy Day Rally organised across Northern Nigeria.
The rally, with the theme: “Thank you President Tinubu for making democracy work for students”, was organised under the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles (PI-CNG/EV).
Speaking during the inauguration, the Executive Chairman of PI-CNG/EV, Mr Ismaeel Ahmed, said the buses were provided to Bayero University Kano (BUK), Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano, and Northwest University Kano.
Represented by the Chief Compliance Officer, Mr Zayyanu Tambariyabo, the PlCNG/EV Executive Chairman said the initiative was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to reduce transportation costs and improve mobility for students across the country.

“This initiative of Mr President commenced about two and a half years ago. We are reaching out across the various geopolitical zones, beginning with selected institutions.
“By the grace of God, we hope to gradually cover the entire country so that every university will benefit,” he said.
Earlier, the Coordinator of the Northern Projects Coordination Office (NPCO), Dr Shamsuddeen Ahmad, said the intervention reflected the practical benefits of democracy for ordinary Nigerians.
According to him, transportation remains one of the major challenges confronting students, and reducing that burden will improve access to education.
Ahmad said the CNG/EV programme under the Renewed Hope Agenda had established more than 300 vehicle conversion centres and 58 CNG refuelling stations nationwide, while over 100,000 vehicles had been converted to run on CNG.

He added that the initiative was currently being implemented in 20 campuses across the country.
“Democracy becomes meaningful when leadership translates into opportunities and solutions that people can see and feel,” he said.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, Prof. Haruna Musa, who spoke on behalf of the benefiting institutions, described the donation as timely and beneficial to students.
Musa said the buses would provide much-needed relief to students who spend significant amounts on transportation between campuses.
He also commended the Federal Government for renegotiating the 2009 ASUU agreement in January 2026, noting that the development had improved staff welfare within the university system.

Also speaking, the President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of Bayero University, Abdulmudallib Kalli, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for the donation.
Kalli said the buses would help address transportation challenges faced by students and improve their commuting experience.
Mr Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, Special Adviser to the President on Media, said the PI-CNG/EV programme was designed to reduce energy and transportation costs for vulnerable Nigerians while promoting cleaner and more affordable alternatives.
