The Federal Government has officially opened a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics Innovation Hub at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.
The facility, called the Renewed Hope-NITDA Innovation Hub, was commissioned on June 8 by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.
The hub was established by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in partnership with the Renewed Hope Initiative. It contains modern laboratories focused on Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing), and the Internet of Things (IoT).
The centre is aimed at helping students gain practical technology skills and access advanced equipment that is often unavailable in many Nigerian universities.
What the Minister Said
Speaking at the event, Dr. Tijani said the hub is an investment in the future of Nigerian youths and not just a building filled with equipment.
He encouraged students to make full use of the facility to develop innovative solutions and contribute to Nigeria’s technological growth.
According to him, although the hub will be open to the wider community, its main goal is to help students transform classroom knowledge into real-world innovations.
He added that the facility can support the development of products and ideas that will strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy and improve the country’s position in the global technology sector.
Facilities Available
The innovation hub includes four specialised laboratories:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Lab
Robotics Lab
Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) Lab
Internet of Things (IoT) Lab
The 3D printing laboratory will expose students to technologies used in industries such as healthcare, aerospace, and construction.
The robotics and IoT laboratories will also support hardware-based innovation, an area where many Nigerian startups face challenges because of the high cost of equipment and product development.
Background
Earlier in February 2026, Dr. Tijani stated that Nigeria’s digital infrastructure is expected to be significantly improved by 2027.
He said the government is investing in major projects, including:
Deployment of 90,000 kilometres of fibre-optic cables
Launch of new communication satellites
Installation of 3,700 additional telecom towers in rural areas
According to the minister, these projects are designed to expand digital access and connectivity across the country.
