The Federal Government has directed an immediate review and strengthening of security architecture around the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, and other critical national institutions following a recent gunmen attack on the facility.
Vice President Kashim Shettima gave the directive on Friday during a visit to NIPSS, where he met with management, staff and participants of Senior Executive Course 48, 2026, in the aftermath of the incident.
He said the move aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening protection around strategic national assets and preventing future security breaches.
Shettima said the security framework around NIPSS and similar institutions would be urgently upgraded, with measures including enhanced surveillance, improved perimeter fencing, stricter access control and increased deployment of security personnel.
The Vice President commiserated with the NIPSS community over the attack, which led to the death of three security personnel, describing it as “painful and unacceptable.”
He extended condolences to the families of the deceased and security agencies, while commending the swift response of operatives who repelled the attackers and restored order.

Shettima also praised the resilience of participants and staff, noting that they maintained composure and continued with academic and policy programmes despite the attack.
He reaffirmed that NIPSS remains a critical national institution for policy development and leadership training, stressing that its safety is a top government priority.
According to him, those behind the attack would be tracked down and brought to justice.
Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, who also addressed the occasion, commended the bravery of security operatives and the composure of NIPSS participants during the incident.
He said the Vice President’s visit underscored the Federal Government’s solidarity with the institute and assured that the state government would continue to collaborate with security agencies to safeguard lives and property around the area.
Mutfwang disclosed that immediate steps would be taken to strengthen security infrastructure, including improved lighting, enhanced surveillance and deployment of additional patrol resources within the Kuru axis.

He added that efforts would be made to reinforce security presence around the cluster of national institutions in the area.
Earlier, the Director-General of NIPSS, Prof. Ayo Omotayo, said the attack was successfully repelled through the prompt response of security operatives.
He said the institute had already activated emergency measures, including reinforcement of security deployment, review of procedures, improved surveillance and tighter access control.
Omotayo appreciated the support of the Armed Forces, police, intelligence agencies and other partners, noting that NIPSS would not allow the incident to disrupt its mandate.
He, however, called for further strengthening of the institute’s security system to ensure long-term safety of lives and critical infrastructure.
The DG thanked the Vice President for the visit, saying it had restored confidence among staff and participants and reinforced the importance of the institute in national development.
