First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in Anambra and Imo: Championing a Shared Vision of Inclusive Development

By Senator Uche Ekwunife, CON

The recent official visits of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to our beloved Anambra and Imo States stand as a monumental testament to the inclusive governance model championed by the current federal administration. I had the privilege of witnessing both engagements firsthand. The arrival of Senator Oluremi Tinubu at the Chinua Achebe International Airport brought an aura of genuine compassion and transformative action to our people in Anambra. Her presence in the Light of the Nation is a deliberate deployment of progressive initiatives designed to elevate the socioeconomic status of our citizens.

As a leader dedicated to public service, I recognize the profound magnitude of these visits. They signify a vital bridge being built between the federal center and our grassroots communities in the Southeast, illustrating a collective hunger for genuine development over partisan sentiments.

One remarkable highlight of her itinerary in Anambra was the launch of the National Community Food Bank Program for the South East zone in Amawbia. Food security is the absolute bedrock of any thriving society. By choosing our zone as the launchpad for this critical intervention, the First Lady has directly addressed the most pressing existential challenge facing vulnerable households today. This initiative goes beyond the mere distribution of palliative materials. It is a structured institutional approach to eradicating hunger and offering agricultural support to widows, the elderly, and persons living with disabilities. A government that cannot feed its most vulnerable populations cannot reasonably demand their civic engagement. This food bank represents a lifeline that will stabilize countless families during these challenging economic times.

This compassionate intervention seamlessly aligns with my enduring vision for our people. Throughout my tenure at the National Assembly, I have consistently maintained that the true measure of legislative and executive success is felt in the dining rooms of our constituents. My mandate has always been intertwined with the survival and prosperity of the grassroots. I have relentlessly advocated for agricultural subsidies, rural empowerment, and direct social safety nets that insulate our people from extreme poverty. Seeing the First Lady champion localized solutions to hunger validates my long-held belief that sustainable development must begin with basic human needs. The synergy between her actions and my vision reinforces my resolve to continue pushing for policies that put food on every table.

Beyond the immediate provision of sustenance, the First Lady demonstrated a profound commitment to the future by inaugurating the Tertiary Education Trust Fund Information and Communications Technology Experience Center at the Federal Polytechnic in Oko. We are navigating an era where the global economy is increasingly driven by digital innovation. By unveiling this modern facility, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has provided the youth of Anambra State with a vital gateway to the global digital economy. This center will serve as an incubator for local talent, equipping our students with remote work skills necessary to compete internationally. Equipping our youth with tech skills ensures they are not left behind, thereby reducing unemployment and fostering a new generation of digital entrepreneurs.

This technological leap perfectly mirrors my blueprint for youth development. I have always championed the necessity of transitioning our educational curriculum to reflect the realities of the twenty-first century. Our young men and women possess immense brilliance that only requires the right platforms to flourish. The facility in Oko represents the exact type of infrastructural investment I have consistently lobbied for because it directly tackles the root causes of youth restiveness. By providing specialized tech training, we are actively converting our demographic dividend into an economic powerhouse. I remain totally committed to supporting every progressive move that expands digital literacy, ensuring every young person has the opportunity to become a creator of technology.

In addition to digital infrastructure and food security, the visit featured the launch of a massive statewide empowerment program at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka. The sheer scale of this intervention is unprecedented, targeting thousands of beneficiaries across all twenty-one local government areas of our state. The distribution of practical vocational tools such as sewing machines, gas cookers, refrigerators, and agro-processing equipment provides an immediate catalyst for grassroots economic revitalization. By placing the means of production directly into the hands of market women and artisans, the First Lady has initiated a ripple effect of wealth creation that will stimulate local economies and generate employment.

When you empower a woman with a sewing machine or a farmer with processing equipment, you are giving them financial independence, dignity, and the ability to educate their children. This holistic approach to poverty alleviation is exactly what I have dedicated my political career to achieving. The alignment between the Renewed Hope Initiative and my developmental agenda is striking. I will continue to champion these exact models of intervention because they produce verifiable results. Our people do not want endless handouts. They want the leverage to build their own prosperity. The tools distributed in Awka provide that exact leverage, transforming beneficiaries from passive aid recipients into active contributors to our gross domestic product.

We must also acknowledge the broader architectural framework driving these interventions. The Renewed Hope Initiative, founded and led by Her Excellency, has rapidly evolved into a formidable vehicle for national transformation. By focusing on agriculture, economic empowerment, health, education, and social investment, the initiative is meticulously dismantling barriers to upward mobility across the six geopolitical zones. It is heartwarming to witness a platform that operates with such compassion, reaching millions of households and delivering tailored solutions to localized problems. This targeted approach to governance restores the faith of the citizenry in the public sector and proves that with dedicated leadership, the myriad socioeconomic challenges plaguing our nation are indeed surmountable.

None of these monumental strides would be possible without the visionary leadership and unwavering support of the Commander in Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I want to use this medium to specifically appreciate Mr. President for his bold and pragmatic approach to governance. Through his amiable wife and the comprehensive Renewed Hope Agenda, he has consistently implemented various policies that will promote the living standards of the common man. His administration has shown rare courage in tackling systemic economic distortions while deploying robust social safety nets to cushion the effects on the vulnerable. The synergy between executive policies and humanitarian outreach creates a balanced governance model where macroeconomic reforms are matched by microeconomic compassion.

President Tinubu has demonstrated an acute understanding of the structural deficits holding our nation back and has rolled out proactive measures to correct them. From the redirection of national resources toward critical infrastructure to strategic investments in sustainable agriculture, the Renewed Hope Agenda is steadily laying the groundwork for a prosperous future. The policies are designed not for short-term applause but for long-term stability. The focus on strengthening local industries shows a comprehensive strategy to elevate the common man from cyclical poverty. As these macroeconomic policies take root, the complementary efforts of the Renewed Hope Initiative ensure that the dividends of democracy are immediately felt at the grassroots level.

In Imo State, the significance of her visit was equally profound. The First Lady flagged off the distribution of agricultural inputs, food items, and economic empowerment tools to thousands of vulnerable women, widows, youth, and persons living with disabilities across the 27 local government areas. She also commissioned projects focused on health and women’s development, reinforcing the federal government’s commitment to reducing poverty and improving livelihoods in the Southeast. The message was clear: no state is being left behind in the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Having served with Senator Oluremi Tinubu in both the 8th and 9th Nigerian Senate, I can personally attest that her generosity is second to none. What she is presently doing through the Renewed Hope Initiative is naturally built-in to her and not politically driven. It is the same compassion, diligence, and commitment to the people that she demonstrated as a distinguished colleague, now amplified on a national scale.

I want to clearly reiterate my unwavering commitment to my constituents. I will continue to champion and support every progressive move to better the well-being of ndị Anambra Central and ndị Anambra in general. My journey in public service has been defined by the trust of my people, and I hold that trust sacred. My fundamental mission remains the same. I will leverage every resource at my disposal to ensure our people receive their fair share of national development. The interventions witnessed this week in Anambra and Imo prove that when we align local aspirations with progressive federal initiatives, the ultimate winner is the common man who desires nothing more than a conducive environment to thrive.

I call upon all citizens to rally behind these progressive initiatives. Let us maximize the equipment, digital centers, and agricultural support provided. We must foster an environment of peace that attracts further investments to our states. The era of divisive rhetoric must give way to unified purpose and shared prosperity. I once again express my profound gratitude to Senator Oluremi Tinubu for her historic visits. May the seeds of empowerment planted during these visits blossom into a magnificent harvest of prosperity as we march toward a brighter future.
