First round of US-Iran talks hit difficult phase, after Trump’s fresh threat, Tehran says…, what exactly happened?

The first round of talks between Iran and the United States has been paused in Switzerland, but not ended, after tensions rose during the meeting. The negotiations, aimed at ending months of conflict in West Asia, were briefly disrupted when the Iranian delegation walked out following remarks by Donald Trump.

Why were the talks paused?

The discussions lasted around 80 minutes and focused on key issues such as ending the conflict, easing sanctions, and releasing Iran’s frozen assets. However, tensions escalated after Trump warned Iran to stop its proxies in Lebanon or face severe consequences.

According to Iranian media, the delegation led by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, along with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, briefly left the venue in protest. Iranian officials later clarified that the talks have only been paused and not called off.

What are the key issues between both sides?

The talks come days after an interim agreement was signed between Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to end nearly four months of hostilities. However, differences remain over key regional issues, especially the situation in Lebanon.

Iran has said that progress depends on the United States fulfilling its commitments under the agreement, particularly ensuring a ceasefire “on all fronts.” Tehran has accused Washington of failing to meet this condition, citing renewed exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

A member of Iran’s negotiating team said that if the war in Lebanon does not end, discussions on other subjects will not move forward.

What happens next?

Despite the tensions, US Vice President JD Vance described the situation as part of a difficult diplomatic process and said progress was still being made. He also reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to a broader regional settlement.

Iranian officials said a draft framework for sanctions waivers on oil exports has been finalised and could be implemented soon. They also said discussions are ongoing regarding the release of Iranian frozen funds with the participation of a Qatari delegation.

The talks took place against the backdrop of a fragile ceasefire in Lebanon and were also linked to a Pakistan-brokered agreement signed earlier. The outcome of this round is expected to shape the agenda for the next phase of negotiations.
