Five killed in head-on crash on Lagos-Badagry Expressway

Five people have died in a head-on collision involving a Toyota Camry and an Iveco truck on the Badagry Expressway in Lagos State.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at Sawmill, near Mowo Bus Stop.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said it received a distress call about the crash at 5:16am and deployed its Dolphin Team from the Igando base to the scene.

According to the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, preliminary findings indicated that the crash was caused by speeding and reckless driving by the Camry driver.

The driver reportedly lost control of the Toyota Camry, with registration number FKJ 630KS, causing it to cross into the opposite lane and collide head-on with the oncoming Iveco truck, marked T28081 LA.

“The impact of the collision resulted in the death of five adult males who were occupants of the Toyota Camry,” Oke-Osanyintolu said in a statement on Saturday.

Emergency responders recovered the bodies and handed them over to officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps for further action.

The response operation involved personnel from LASEMA, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the FRSC and the police from the Morogbo Division.

Two tow trucks were also deployed to remove the wreckage from the expressway. The vehicles were subsequently taken to the Morogbo Police Division, while the road was cleared and reopened to traffic.

Oke-Osanyintolu expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged motorists to avoid speeding, dangerous overtaking and other reckless driving practices, particularly during early morning journeys.

He reiterated that road safety was a collective responsibility and said LASEMA would continue to work with other emergency agencies to ensure prompt response to road crashes across the state.
