The Ilamuren Council of Kingmakers in Ijebu-Ode has nominated five princes for consideration as the next Awujale of Ijebuland and forwarded their names to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.
The nominations were approved by the council led by the Olisa of Ijebu-Ode, Chief Rasheed Adeoye Adesanya, who personally signed the letter addressed to the governor.
According to the letter, the kingmakers acted in line with Section 4(2) of the Chiefs Law of 1957 and the customary law regulating the selection and succession to the Awujale of Ijebuland.
The five nominees are Prince Ademorin Aliu Kuye, Prince Isiaq Ayodele Adewale Adekoya (Eleruja), Prince Onabanjo Abimbola John, Prince Oluwaseun Waheed Omopenu Onanuga and Prince Olabode Onanuga.
Adesanya explained that, as the royal authority over the Ilamuren-in-Council and head of the kingmakers, he convened several meetings to deliberate on the selection process for a new Awujale.
He noted that the declaration guiding the succession process requires the kingmakers to either unanimously select one candidate or submit the names of preferred candidates to the state government for a final decision.
“It is in pursuance of that we forward the five names for the choice of the State Government,” the letter stated.
The Olisa added that the recommendations took into account the overall interests of Ijebu-Ode and the provisions of Ogun State’s chieftaincy laws, expressing confidence that the nominees possess the experience and pedigree to advance the development of Ijebuland, Ogun State and Nigeria.
He also prayed for the continued prosperity of Ogun State and the enduring greatness of Ijebuland.
