Fresh Concern as US Ambassador Position in Nigeria Remains Vacant

Fresh concern has emerged over diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the United States as the ambassadorial position in the country remains vacant.

The development is part of a wider gap, with over 100 countries currently without Senate-confirmed US ambassadors.

Official records released by the United States Department of State show that Nigeria is among 117 countries yet to have a substantive ambassador representing Washington.

The document, titled “Ambassadorial Assignments Overseas,” was published on April 8, 2026, by the Office of Presidential Appointments.

The report highlights a global shortfall in US diplomatic postings. It cuts across several regions, including Africa, Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania. Nigeria’s inclusion has raised eyebrows, given its strategic importance as Africa’s most populous nation and a key US partner in trade, security, and regional stability.

Across Africa, several countries are affected by the same situation. These include Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and Egypt, among others. The absence of confirmed envoys in these nations has fueled concerns about reduced diplomatic engagement on the continent.

In Europe, major countries such as Germany, Norway, and Ukraine are also without US ambassadors. The situation extends to parts of Asia and the Middle East, including countries like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Pakistan.

In the Americas, nations such as Brazil, Jamaica, and Haiti are also on the list. The trend continues in Oceania, where countries like Australia and New Zealand currently do not have confirmed US envoys.

Diplomatic observers say the vacancies could slow down bilateral engagements. It may also affect policy coordination, trade discussions, and security cooperation between the US and affected nations.

The development follows earlier changes in US foreign service structure. In December 2025, the administration of Donald Trump recalled nearly 30 diplomats serving in ambassadorial and senior embassy roles across different countries.

The move was part of efforts to realign diplomatic representation with the administration’s foreign policy direction. However, the large number of withdrawals created noticeable gaps in several key missions worldwide.

Although ambassadors serve at the discretion of the US president, experts believe prolonged vacancies may weaken diplomatic presence. Countries like Nigeria, which play a major role in regional politics and economic activities, may feel the impact more strongly.
