The summer transfer window has closed across most of Europe’s major leagues, but the end of the window has not brought an end to the transfer market for players without clubs. A number of high-profile footballers remain unattached and can still negotiate contracts, although their ability to register immediately will depend on the rules of the competition and the individual league. Recent reports have highlighted a particularly strong group of experienced players who are still searching for their next destination.
The list includes former Champions League winners, Premier League stars, Ballon d’Or winners and players with extensive international experience. Among the biggest names are Paul Pogba, Jadon Sancho, Karim Benzema, Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos and David Alaba. Several of them became free agents after their contracts ended, while others left their previous clubs after spells that did not work out as planned.
For some, age and recent injury records have complicated the search for a new club, while others remain attractive because of their experience and pedigree. Sky Sport’s current list of unattached players includes Pogba, Benzema, Sancho, Alaba and several other former stars, while Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport also identifies Carvajal, Mahrez, Brozović, Pogba, Sancho and Sterling among the notable players still looking for clubs.
Here is a look at 14 of the most prominent free agents currently available:
1. Paul Pogba
Position: Midfielder
Age: 33
Last club: AS Monaco
Nationality: France
Pogba is one of the biggest names on the free-agent market. The former Manchester United and Juventus midfielder joined Monaco but saw his spell disrupted by fitness problems, and the French club terminated his contract in August.
Pogba previously served a doping ban before returning to football and joining Monaco. His pedigree remains significant, having won the 2018 FIFA World Cup with France and the Europa League and League Cup with Manchester United.
A move to MLS has been suggested as one possible destination.
2. Jadon Sancho
Position: Winger
Age: 26
Last club: Manchester United
Nationality: England
Sancho remains one of the youngest and potentially most attractive names available.
The former Borussia Dortmund star joined Manchester United in 2021 but struggled to reproduce the form that made him one of Europe’s most sought-after young attackers in Germany. His time at Old Trafford included loan spells away from the club before he became a free agent in 2026.
Borussia Dortmund have been linked with a potential return, with reports suggesting the German club is considering an incentive-based contract.
3. Dani Carvajal
Position: Right-back
Age: 34
Last club: Real Madrid
Nationality: Spain
Carvajal is one of the most decorated defenders still without a club.
The Spanish full-back spent more than a decade at Real Madrid and won multiple Champions League titles during his time at the Santiago Bernabéu.
His experience at the highest level makes him an attractive option for clubs looking for an experienced defender, although his age and recent injury problems could influence his next move.
4. Sergio Ramos
Position: Centre-back
Age: 40
Last club: Monterrey
Nationality: Spain
Ramos remains one of the most decorated defenders of his generation.
The former Real Madrid captain won multiple Champions League titles and domestic trophies during his illustrious career in Spain, before spells with Paris Saint-Germain and Monterrey.
At 40, the biggest question surrounding Ramos is whether he intends to continue playing or bring his career to an end. He nevertheless remains one of the most recognisable names available.
5. Karim Benzema
Position: Striker
Age: 38
Last club: Al-Hilal
Nationality: France
The former Ballon d’Or winner is another major name on the market.
Benzema left Al-Hilal after a short spell with the Saudi Pro League club. Before moving to Saudi Arabia, he enjoyed a spectacular career at Real Madrid, where he won five Champions League titles and numerous domestic honours.
His next move remains uncertain, with retirement also being discussed as a possibility.
6. David Alaba
Position: Defender
Age: 34
Last club: Real Madrid
Nationality: Austria
Alaba is another former Real Madrid player currently without a club.
The Austrian defender joined Real Madrid after a highly successful spell with Bayern Munich, where he won multiple Bundesliga titles and Champions League honours.
His versatility remains one of his biggest strengths, having operated at centre-back, left-back and in midfield during his career.
7. Philippe Coutinho
Position: Midfielder/Attacker
Age: 34
Last club: Vasco da Gama
Nationality: Brazil
Coutinho is searching for another club after ending his spell with Brazilian side Vasco da Gama.
The former Liverpool and Barcelona playmaker was once among the most expensive players in football following his move from Liverpool to Barcelona.
He has since struggled to maintain the extraordinary level he showed at Liverpool, but his experience and technical ability continue to make him a notable name on the market.
8. Yves Bissouma
Position: Midfielder
Age: 29
Last club: Tottenham Hotspur
Nationality: Ivory Coast
Bissouma is one of the younger players on this list.
The defensive midfielder previously made his name at Brighton before moving to Tottenham. He is now available after leaving the Premier League club.
At 29, Bissouma potentially offers clubs several years of service and extensive Premier League experience.
9. Raheem Sterling
Position: Winger
Age: 31
Last club: Feyenoord
Nationality: England
Sterling has become another surprise name among the available players.
The former Manchester City and Liverpool attacker spent the latter stages of his recent career at Chelsea before moving through a loan spell and subsequently joining Feyenoord.
He won multiple Premier League titles with Manchester City and remains one of England’s most experienced international attackers.
10. Riyad Mahrez
Position: Winger
Age: 35
Last club: Al-Ahli
Nationality: Algeria
Mahrez remains one of the most decorated African players on the market.
The Algerian winger won the Premier League with Leicester City in the remarkable 2015/16 season before moving to Manchester City, where he won further Premier League titles and the Champions League.
He later moved to Saudi Arabia with Al-Ahli and is now without a club.
11. Oleksandr Zinchenko
Position: Defender/Midfielder
Age: 29
Last club: Ajax
Nationality: Ukraine
Zinchenko is another relatively young free agent who has extensive Premier League and Champions League experience.
He enjoyed a successful period at Manchester City before moving to Arsenal and subsequently joining Ajax.
His ability to operate both as a full-back and midfielder adds versatility to his profile.
12. Wilfried Zaha
Position: Winger
Age: 33
Last club: Charlotte FC
Nationality: Ivory Coast
Zaha remains one of the most recognisable African attackers available.
The Ivorian spent the majority of his Premier League career with Crystal Palace, becoming one of the club’s most influential players before moving to Galatasaray.
He has since had spells away from England and remains in search of another club.
13. Marcelo Brozović
Position: Midfielder
Age: 33
Last club: Al-Nassr
Nationality: Croatia
Brozović is a highly experienced defensive midfielder who is also available.
The Croatian spent eight years at Inter Milan before moving to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, where he won the Saudi Pro League.
His familiarity with Serie A could make him an attractive option for Italian clubs looking for experience in midfield.
14. Renato Sanches
Position: Midfielder
Age: 29
Last club: Paris Saint-Germain
Nationality: Portugal
Sanches is another player with significant European experience despite a career that has been affected by injuries and inconsistent spells.
The Portuguese midfielder rose to prominence at Benfica and earned international recognition by helping Portugal win Euro 2016.
He later played for Bayern Munich, Lille, Paris Saint-Germain and other clubs, but is now searching for a new destination.
