A wedding reception in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria has dramatically been disrupted after the venue’s Plaster of Paris (POP) ceiling suddenly collapsed during the event, sending debris crashing down onto guests and throwing the celebration into chaos.
Footage of the incident, which has since circulated widely on social media, captures the terrifying moment the decorated ceiling gave way mid-event, with ceiling panels, fabric decorations, and structural material crashing onto the hall floor as guests scrambled to safety.
A second clip shows the aftermath, the remaining ceiling hanging in tatters above a room covered in debris, with guests still visible beneath the wreckage.
The collapse occurred while the wedding reception was in full swing, with a large number of guests in attendance seated at decorated tables throughout the venue. The suddenness of the incident left little time for an orderly evacuation.
The cause of the ceiling collapse had not been officially confirmed at the time of publication. Structural failures of this nature are often linked to poor construction quality, use of substandard materials, water damage weakening ceiling supports, or excessive load from decorations mounted onto POP installations.
The number of injuries sustained in the incident was not immediately confirmed, though footage suggests guests in the direct path of the collapsing material were at significant risk of being struck by debris.
