The Super Eagles suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group L encounter in Bissau on Tuesday.
The Wild Dogs struck early and maintained their dominance at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro to hand Nigeria their first defeat of the qualifying campaign.
Franculino Djú opened the scoring in the 15th minute, curling a left-footed effort beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali after being played into the box by Renato Nhaga.
The Super Eagles struggled to create clear-cut opportunities but came close to restoring parity before the interval when Alex Iwobi set up Ademola Lookman, only for Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Embadjé to make a crucial save.
Nigeria coach Eric Chelle responded at half-time by introducing Moses Simon and Moses Usor as the visitors searched for an equaliser.
The changes failed to produce the desired response, however, as Guinea-Bissau doubled their advantage in the 66th minute through Mama Baldé.
Baldé received the ball from Mamadi Camará, cut into the Nigerian penalty area and fired a low shot past Nwabali to put the hosts firmly in control.
Nigeria’s night went from bad to worse in stoppage time when Álvaro Djaló added a third, completing the rout and sealing Guinea-Bissau’s second consecutive victory in Group L.
The result leaves Guinea-Bissau top of Group L with six points from two matches, while Nigeria remain on three points following their opening-day 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar.
The defeat is a major setback for the Super Eagles, who are competing with Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar for the group’s qualifying place, with co-hosts Tanzania already guaranteed a place at the 2027 tournament.
Nigeria will now have to regroup for their remaining qualifying fixtures after a night in Bissau in which the Super Eagles were comprehensively beaten by the Wild Dogs.
