A devastating mass shooting in Shreveport, Louisiana, United States, has left eight children dead after a gunman opened fire at multiple homes in what authorities described as a domestic-related attack.
The violence unfolded in the early hours of Sunday in the Cedar Grove neighbourhood, where police said at least 10 people were shot across two houses and nearby locations.
The victims, all children aged between one and 14, were among those killed in what officials are calling one of the worst tragedies in the city’s history.
According to law enforcement, the suspect, an adult male believed to have connections to some of the victims, carried out the shootings before fleeing the scene.
Authorities said he later hijacked a vehicle, triggering a police pursuit that ended in neighbouring Bossier Parish, where he was shot dead by officers.
Two adult women survived the attack but sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment in hospital. A young boy was also injured while attempting to escape the violence.
Police indicated that the incident appears to have stemmed from a domestic dispute rather than a random act of violence, although investigations are ongoing to determine the exact motive. Some reports suggest that several of the victims were related to the attacker.
Officials described the crime scene as extensive, spanning multiple locations, and called for public support as the community grapples with the aftermath of the tragedy.
Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as possibly the most tragic event the city has ever faced, while authorities have urged anyone with information to assist in the ongoing investigation.
