Losing an Android phone can expose users to the risk of financial loss and unauthorised access to personal information, but built-in tracking tools can help locate, lock or erase a missing device remotely.
If your Android phone is lost or stolen, you can try to locate it using Google’s Find Hub, formerly known as Find My Device. Samsung users can also use SmartThings Find.
These services can help you locate your phone, make it ring, lock it remotely or erase its data to protect your personal information.
1. Use Google Find Hub
Google Find Hub is the main tracking option for most Android phones.
Step 1: Open Find Hub
Using another phone, tablet or computer, visit:
https://www.google.com/android/find
You can also open the Find Hub app on another Android device.
Step 2: Sign in to your Google account
Sign in with the same Google account that was logged into the missing phone.

Step 3: Select the missing phone
If you have more than one device linked to your Google account, select the lost or stolen phone from the list.
Step 4: Check its location
If the phone is switched on and connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi, Find Hub may show its current location on the map.
If the phone is offline, you may see its last known location, depending on the device and settings.
Step 5: Choose an action
Depending on the device and its connection status, you may be able to:
Play sound: Makes the phone ring at full volume for about five minutes, even if it is on silent or vibrate. This is useful if you think the phone is nearby.
Mark as lost: Locks the phone and allows you to display a message and contact number on the lock screen. This can help someone who finds the phone contact you.
Erase device: Remotely deletes the data on the phone by performing a factory reset. This should generally be considered a last resort because you may no longer be able to track the device afterwards.
What Must Be Enabled for Find Hub to Work?
For live location tracking, the phone generally needs to have:
A Google account signed in.
Find Hub enabled.
Location services enabled.
An internet connection through mobile data or Wi-Fi.
The device registered and visible through Google Play.
Some newer Android devices can also be located when offline through Google’s Find Hub network. However, this depends on the phone model and the settings that were enabled before the phone went missing.
2. Samsung Users Can Try SmartThings Find
If you have a Samsung Galaxy phone, you have another option through SmartThings Find, formerly known as Find My Mobile.

Sign in with the Samsung account linked to the missing phone and select the device.
Depending on the phone’s settings and connection status, you may be able to:
See its current or last known location.
Make it ring.
Lock the device.
Display a message or contact number.
Erase the device.
Use offline finding through nearby Samsung devices.
Offline finding works best when the relevant Samsung tracking and offline-finding features were enabled before the phone was lost.
3. What to Do Immediately After Losing Your Phone
Tracking the phone should not be your only priority. Take these steps as soon as possible.
Call your phone
Try calling your number. A person who found the phone may answer and be willing to return it.
Block your SIM
Contact your mobile network provider and ask them to suspend the SIM to prevent unauthorised calls, SMS messages and mobile-data use.
You can also ask your network provider about IMEI blocking or device blacklisting, where available.
Secure your financial accounts
If your phone contains banking or payment applications, take steps to protect your accounts immediately.
Change passwords and security credentials for important services, particularly:
Your Google account.
Email accounts.
Banking applications.
Social media accounts.
Other services containing sensitive or payment information.
Report the theft or loss
If the phone was stolen, report the incident to the police.
Provide details such as:
Phone brand and model.
Colour.
IMEI number.
Time and location of the incident.
Last known location, if available.
Keep your police report because it may also be useful for insurance or recovery purposes.
Check Google Maps Timeline
If Location History was enabled on your Google account, Google Maps Timeline may provide information about recent movements associated with your account.
However, Timeline should be treated as supplementary information rather than a guaranteed way of locating the phone.
4. What If Find Hub Says “No Location”?
Find Hub may show “Location unavailable” or display an older location.
This can happen if:
The phone is switched off.
The battery is dead.
The phone has no internet connection.
The phone is in airplane mode.
Location services were disabled.
Find Hub was not enabled.
The device has been reset or removed from the relevant account.
Keep checking Find Hub periodically. If the phone is switched on and reconnects to the internet, its location may become available.
If you believe you are unlikely to recover the phone, consider using the Mark as lost feature to protect your information. Use Erase device when protecting your data is more important than continuing to track the phone.
5. How to Protect Your Next Android Phone
You can make it easier to recover your next phone by preparing these features in advance.
Enable Find Hub
Go to your Android phone’s settings and make sure Find Hub/Find My Device is enabled.
Also ensure that Location is turned on.
Use a strong screen lock
Protect your phone with a strong PIN, password or pattern, together with biometric security such as fingerprint or face unlock where available.
Samsung users should enable SmartThings Find
If you use a Samsung phone, enable SmartThings Find and its available offline-finding features.
Record your IMEI number
You can usually find your IMEI by dialling:

You can also find it on the phone’s original box, purchase receipt or device information.
Keep the IMEI somewhere secure so you can provide it to your network provider or the police if the phone is lost or stolen.
Important: If a tracking service shows the location of a stolen phone, do not confront or attempt to recover it yourself if doing so could put you in danger. Share the location information with the police or other appropriate authorities instead.
