Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has directed her legal team to challenge a High Court judgement awarding N1 billion in damages to former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.
The Kogi Central lawmaker, speaking on Friday, rejected the ruling and signalled a protracted legal battle, insisting she would pursue the matter to the highest court.
“We are appealing the judgement. I don’t have N1billion. We will drag this matter to Supreme Court,” she said.
Akpoti-Uduaghan also faulted the court’s decision, alleging that critical evidence presented by her legal team was disregarded in arriving at the verdict.
The dispute traces back to 2022, when the Kogi State Government allegedly called for her arrest, accusing her in national newspaper publications of sponsoring terrorism and being linked to major security incidents, including the July 2022 Kuje Prison break and the Owo church attack.
Responding to the allegations at the time, the senator maintained her innocence, stating that she was outside the country when both incidents occurred.
The case is expected to test the limits of defamation law and due process, as it moves through the appellate courts.
