Governor Peter Mbah has put an end to speculation that he may leave the Peoples Democratic Party Party (PDP), saying he remains loyal to the party and is committed to providing good governance to the people of Enugu state.
“I am still in Enugu and as you can see, the flag behind me is the flag of PDP,” Mbah said at an interactive session with members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in PDP on Saturday, June 28.
The governor admitted that the party is currently grappling with internal disputes but noted that the issues do not only affect PDP.
“Other political parties in the country are also facing challenges,” he said, expressing confidence that PDP will weather the storm in due course.
Responding to a question on contesting as an independent candidate, Mbah said Nigeria’s legal framework does not allow for it.
“Our constitution does not allow anyone to contest as an independent candidate and we do not recognise that. That means you have to have the support of a political party,” he said. “So you have to continue to play politics because you can’t completely escape from it.”
On the state of governance in Enugu state, Mbah said his government remains committed to serving the people and is not caught up in endless political fights.

“The people of Enugu state have also made it clear that we are here to serve them. So, our main focus is governance,” he said. “I believe that, at the end of the day, the people have to decide whether to renew our tenure or throw us out.”
The governor also announced a surprising reconciliation: his main rival in the 2023 general elections, Chijioke Edeoga, has returned to PDP and is currently working with his government.
“So, we are working closely together and that has also brought a lot of peace because we are not wasting money on various political fights.”
“We are quite peaceful here in terms of politics and cooperation. We have to work with a certain institution or person to achieve our common goal and build our country,” he said.
His comments come amid a wave of defections from the party at the top. PDP Former
Bukola Senate President, who chairs the party’s Reconciliation and Conference Committee, also spoke on the matter, saying defections were largely driven by the political elite and did not reflect the party’s strength at the grassroots.
