A woman has reportedly found herself struggling to pay her rent after borrowing ₦450,000 to purchase aso-ebi for a wedding she was not planning to attend.
Her cousin, who shared the experience, said he initially thought she was joking when she disclosed that she had taken a loan to buy the fabric.
Explaining her decision, the woman reportedly feared that failing to purchase the aso-ebi could change how people within her social circle perceived her.
She said, “If I don’t buy it, people will ask questions. My friends will think I’ve changed.”
Lady faces rent problem weeks after buying aso-ebi
Concerned about her financial priorities, her cousin questioned how she intended to pay her rent at the end of the month.
She responded, “Abeg, leave that one. You don’t understand how these things work.”
However, three weeks later, the woman reportedly called him after her landlord gave her seven days to complete her rent payment. At the time, she had only ₦80,000 remaining.
When reminded about the ₦450,000 she had borrowed, she reportedly admitted that her decision might appear unwise but explained why buying the fabric had seemed important.
She said, “I know it sounds stupid, but if I had shown up without the aso-ebi, everybody would have noticed.”
Man raises question about social pressure and spending
Reflecting on the incident, the narrator suggested that his cousin was less concerned about impressing strangers than about appearing financially unstable before people who knew her.
He subsequently raised a broader question about the pressure to maintain appearances and whether protecting one’s social image is worth spending money one cannot afford.
