Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has explained why he keeps moving from one political party to another.
NewsWatch Nigeria reports that the former Anambra State governor said his decisions are mainly caused by internal problems and court cases within the parties.
Obi spoke on Thursday during a visit to the permanent site of the University on the Niger, where he donated ₦25 million to support the institution.
During the visit, he said he does not leave political parties without reason and insisted that his movements are based on principles and the unstable nature of many political groups in the country.
Obi recently left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). According to him, he has repeatedly faced situations where political parties became trapped in long legal battles and internal disagreements.
Obi said he experienced such problems while in the Labour Party and also faced similar challenges in ADC. He stated that in many cases he became the main target during the disputes, making it difficult for him to continue remaining in those parties.
Obi said, “I have never left any party for leaving’s sake. I leave when I see conflict and unresolved crises. In one case, I was in the Labour Party and saw endless litigation. In ADC as well, I experienced similar issues. In most cases, I became the target, and I had to move.”
He also spoke about the state of politics in Nigeria, saying many political parties focus more on gaining power than building true democratic systems.
He called for stronger internal democracy and better tolerance among party members.
