The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit the names of their candidates for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections, providing parties with additional time to complete their internal nomination processes.
The electoral commission announced the extension following consultations with political parties and other key stakeholders involved in preparations for the 2027 general elections. According to INEC, the decision is intended to ensure a smoother and more inclusive candidate nomination process while allowing parties to resolve outstanding administrative and procedural issues.
In a statement, the commission said the revised timetable is expected to give political parties sufficient opportunity to conclude their primaries and upload the details of their nominated candidates through INEC’s designated nomination portal within the new deadline.
INEC emphasized that while the submission period has been extended, political parties are expected to comply fully with the provisions of the Electoral Act, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and all guidelines governing the nomination of candidates.
The commission also urged political parties to avoid last-minute submissions and ensure that all candidate information is accurate and complete to prevent unnecessary delays or disqualification arising from documentation errors.
Political analysts believe the extension could help reduce disputes arising from rushed primaries and documentation challenges, particularly among major political parties preparing for what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 election.
The extension affects nominations for the presidential election as well as candidates seeking election into the Senate and the House of Representatives. However, INEC reiterated that every other activity on the official election timetable remains in force unless otherwise communicated.
The commission assured Nigerians of its commitment to conducting credible, transparent, and inclusive elections, adding that it will continue to work closely with political parties and stakeholders to ensure strict compliance with electoral laws.
Political parties are expected to take advantage of the additional time to finalize their candidate selection processes and submit all required documents before the new deadline announced by INEC.
