The Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Olufemi Oluyede, has commended Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, for what he described as “uncommon” support to troops under Operation Fansan Yamma.
Mr Oluyede gave the commendation during an official visit to Zamfara State, where he met with the governor and also visited the headquarters of the Operation Fansan Yamma theatre in Gusau.
During a courtesy visit to the Government House, Gusau, the CDS highlighted the growing collaboration between the state government and the military in tackling insecurity.
“I am here today to commend His Excellency, the Governor, for his support for Operation Fansan Yamma, which is actually uncommon. I want to particularly thank you for that,” he said.
He also appreciated the people of Zamfara for their cooperation, stressing the need for collective action in addressing security challenges.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us. We must come together to confront these challenges head-on. With leaders like Governor Lawal, we can make meaningful progress,” he added.
Mr Oluyede disclosed that he visited the theatre headquarters, where he interacted with troops and assessed operational challenges.
“Some of the issues raised were resolved immediately, while others have been noted for further action,” he said.
In his response, Governor Lawal said tackling banditry in Zamfara would significantly reduce insecurity across the country, estimating that it accounts for about 75 per cent of banditry in Nigeria.
“As leaders, we must do everything possible to ensure our people live in peace. I do not believe these criminals are stronger than our troops—it is simply a matter of addressing existing challenges,” the governor said.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting security agencies, noting that investment in security remains a top priority.
“Just last month, the Minister of Defence was here to commission sophisticated operational vehicles procured by our administration,” he said.
Mr Lawal stressed that development efforts would be meaningless without security, adding that continued collaboration with the military is essential to ending the menace.
“I want to thank Mr President for his continued support, but we still need more assistance to fully address the situation,” he added.
The governor assured the CDS of his readiness to sustain support for the military and other security agencies in the fight against insecurity.
