Broadcast journalist Captain Smart has made fresh allegations regarding the reaction of some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following the imprisonment of Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking on his Onua Maakye programme on Onua TV, Captain Smart claimed that some influential figures within the NPP privately celebrated the news of Chairman Wontumi’s jail sentence despite publicly expressing sadness over the development.
According to the broadcaster, some party members allegedly organised celebrations after hearing about the court’s decision, but later presented themselves as disappointed during public appearances and press engagements.
“I’m not going to mention names,” Captain Smart said, adding that some senior members of the party were allegedly aware of the situation.
He further claimed that the party’s General Secretary was also aware of the allegations, though he did not provide evidence to support the claims during the programme.
Captain Smart also alleged that celebrations were held in parts of the Ashanti Region and Greater Accra following the court’s decision, adding that another gathering was expected to take place in the Eastern Region over the weekend.
The comments have generated discussions among political observers and social media users, with some calling for clarification and evidence regarding the allegations, while others have debated the internal dynamics within the party.
Meanwhile, supporters of Chairman Wontumi have continued to express solidarity with him following his sentencing, describing him as a loyal party figure who deserves support during the period.
The claims made by Captain Smart have not been independently verified, and no individuals have been publicly named or confirmed to have participated in any alleged celebrations.
