The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has described as historic a meeting between its delegation and senior members of Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, saying the engagement marked a milestone in its international diplomatic outreach.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group said its delegation met with Knesset Deputy Speaker Nissim Vaturi and Limor Son Har-Melech, Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee, in Jerusalem.
IPOB said the discussions focused on its campaign over the fate of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, and efforts to build international support for its cause.
The group expressed appreciation to the Israeli lawmakers for what it described as a warm reception and solidarity, adding that the meeting reflected its commitment to pursuing its objectives through peaceful diplomacy and international engagement.
IPOB maintained that it would continue to seek strategic partnerships with countries it believes share its values of justice, liberty and human rights.
The group also reiterated its position that the creation of an independent Biafra remains the solution to insecurity in Nigeria’s South-East, insisting that it would continue to pursue its objectives through lawful and non-violent means.
It said the Jerusalem meeting forms part of its broader diplomatic engagements in Israel, the United States and other countries.
Nnamdi Kanu, the founder of IPOB, has been in the custody of Nigerian authorities since his re-arrest in 2021 after being convicted on terrorism-related charges.
