Iran-US Draft Deal: After a prolonged conflict between the United States and Iran, a possible peace agreement to ease tension in West Asia appears to be nearing completion. President Donald Trump on Sunday said that a deal has been “largely negotiated” and a joint announcement by both countries is expected soon.
According to a detailed report by Axios, discussions on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, easing restrictions on Iranian oil exports, and negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program are also included in the entire development. Trump confirmed ongoing talks with regional leaders and described the evolving consensus as a “Memorandum of Understanding pertaining to PEACE.” The final agreement would need approval from Iran, the US, and all participating sides, AP reported.
10 key points about Iran-US possible deal
According to media reports, the final draft of an “interim peace agreement” between the United States and Iran has been finalized, with both countries expected to announce it soon.
The Strait of Hormuz lies at the core of this entire peace deal. Approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil trade passes through this crucial waterway. While the United States wants uninterrupted shipping through the route, Iran views it as a strategic strength.
Iran’s state-run Fars News, however, rejected the US President’s claim that the Strait of Hormuz would be “reopened.” The Islamic Republic maintained that while maritime movement could increase, it would not imply “free passage,” and that the ultimate control of Hormuz would be with Tehran.
