Iran-US war escalates: Drones shot down, radar sites destroyed, oil tanker seized; 5 big updates

Tensions between the United States and Iran have intensified once again, with fresh military actions, economic pressure, and diplomatic disagreements adding to the ongoing conflict. While both countries continue discussions over a possible agreement, recent developments show that major differences remain.

US claims to shoot down four Iranian drones

One of the biggest developments came from the US military, which claimed that it shot down four Iranian attack drones near the strategically important Hormuz Strait. According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the drones were moving toward the waterway and posed a threat to shipping in the region.

The US also said it carried out strikes on Iranian coastal radar sites located on Goruk and Qeshm islands. Iran has not yet issued an official response to these claims.

US seizes oil tanker linked to Iranian network

In another significant move, the US Indo-Pacific Command announced that it had intercepted the oil tanker “Davina” in the Indian Ocean. The vessel, which can carry around two million barrels of crude oil, was already under US sanctions.

American officials allege that the tanker was part of Iran’s oil export network. Analysts believe the action is intended to increase pressure on Iran’s economy by targeting its oil trade and shipping activities.

Peace talks stuck over $24 billion in frozen funds

Efforts to reach a peace agreement appear to have stalled over frozen Iranian funds. According to reports, Iran is seeking the release of $24 billion in frozen assets as part of any future deal.

Iranian officials reportedly want $12 billion released immediately after signing an interim agreement, with the remaining amount to follow later. However, US officials are said to be reluctant, fearing that releasing the funds would weaken their negotiating position.

Iran pardons more than 2000 prisoners

Football team staff face US visa restrictions

The conflict has also affected sports. Reports suggest that US authorities have denied visas to at least 15 members of Iran’s national football team’s coaching, technical, and administrative staff.

Some of those affected were reportedly recognized by FIFA as official team members. The decision could create challenges for the team’s international preparations and further add to tensions between the two countries.
