Hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough between Iran and the United States appear to be fading, while tensions between Iran and Israel have flared up once again. In a major escalation, Iran launched attacks on two of Israel’s most important military airbases, raising fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force said it carried out strikes under an operation called “Operation Nasr.” According to Iranian officials, the attacks targeted Israel’s Nevatim and Tel Nof airbases, both considered key assets of the Israeli Air Force.
The strikes come amid growing regional tensions and continued military exchanges between the two countries.
Why The Airbases Matter
Nevatim Airbase
Nevatim is one of Israel’s most advanced military airbases. It hosts the country’s F-35I Adir stealth fighter jets, which play a central role in Israel’s long-range strike capabilities. The base is also important for military operations linked to Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Iran.
Tel Nof Airbase
Tel Nof is one of Israel’s oldest and most important air force bases. It is home to F-15 fighter jets and supports pilot training, combat squadrons and several special military operations. The base is considered a major hub of Israeli air power.
Reason Behind The Attack
Iran said the strikes were carried out in response to Israeli missile attacks on three Iranian radar sites. Earlier, Israel had reportedly targeted the Mahshahr petrochemical complex in southwestern Iran, an important energy-rich coastal region.
Following the attacks, air raid sirens sounded in several Israeli cities as missiles were launched toward Israeli territory. Israel’s air defence systems were activated, while authorities advised residents to move to protected areas.
Nuclear Deal Efforts Hit
The latest escalation comes at a time when US President Donald Trump was reportedly making a final push for a nuclear agreement with Iran.
In an interview, Trump said both sides had been close to a deal before the latest round of attacks. He urged Iran and Israel to return to negotiations and avoid further military action. Reports also suggest that Washington has been encouraging restraint to prevent the conflict from expanding.
Region On Edge
Iran has warned that any further military action by Israel or the United States could lead to attacks on American and Israeli interests across the region. Some Iran-backed groups have also issued warnings against further escalation.
With ceasefire efforts appearing to have collapsed and direct attacks now targeting key military infrastructure, concerns are growing that the conflict could move into a more dangerous phase. Analysts say the situation remains highly sensitive, with the risk of a broader regional confrontation increasing.
