Israel spying on US? Pentagon raises counterintelligence threat to ‘critical’ amid Trump-Netanyahu rift, these top officials allegedly targeted, they are…

Tensions between the United States and Israel appear to be rising after several intelligence reports flagged concerns over alleged Israeli surveillance of senior American officials. According to reports cited by major US media outlets, American agencies have raised the counterintelligence threat level linked to Israel to “critical”, the highest category, signalling serious concern within the US defence establishment. Israel has denied all such allegations.

The United States and Israel have long been close allies, and intelligence gathering between partners is not new. However, recent developments suggest that US officials believe Israeli activities may have crossed an acceptable line, especially during sensitive discussions related to the Iran conflict.

Who are the targets of Israeli surveillance?

Reports suggest that Israel has stepped up efforts to monitor top American officials involved in foreign policy and defence. Among those reportedly targeted are Steve Witkoff, a special envoy of Donald Trump, along with senior Pentagon officials Elbridge A Colby and Michael P DiMino IV.

According to the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), there have been multiple incidents in recent weeks that raised alarm. These include suspected attempts to monitor communications of US military personnel and officials. In some cases, defence staff in Israel reportedly discovered software planted on their phones that could intercept conversations.

Officials told US media that such actions appear aimed at understanding Washington’s strategy, especially regarding negotiations with Iran. Some reports described the scale of intelligence activity as unusually aggressive.

What triggered the latest concerns?

The concerns have grown amid ongoing disagreements between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu over handling the Iran conflict and military actions in West Asia. These differences have reportedly led to tense exchanges between the two sides in recent days.

The surveillance issue is not entirely new. Reports indicate that such activities increased in late 2024, during the time when the US pressured Israel to limit its military operations in Gaza. There have also been earlier incidents, including attempts to plant listening devices and intelligence-gathering efforts targeting US facilities.

How could this impact Iran peace talks?

Experts believe the situation could complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts with Iran. The US and Israel have been closely coordinating militarily, particularly through Central Command operations. However, rising mistrust may lead to tighter restrictions on intelligence sharing.

If confirmed, these developments could strain one of the world’s most important strategic partnerships at a critical time.
