It will take time for this wound to heal - Lionel Messi breaks silence after Argentina World Cup final loss

Lionel Messi has broken his silence after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

The Argentina captain admitted the defeat brought him “immense pain,” acknowledging that it would take time to come to terms with missing out on a second consecutive World Cup title.

The 39-year-old had been aiming to lead La Albiceleste to back-to-back World Cup crowns after inspiring the South American giants to glory in Qatar four years earlier. However, Spain emerged victorious in the final, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in extra time to seal a 1-0 win after a goalless 90 minutes.

Despite the disappointment, Messi expressed pride in Argentina’s run to the final, praising the team’s determination and thanking supporters for their unwavering backing throughout the competition.

The Inter Miami star also congratulated Spain on becoming world champions, showing respect despite the heartbreaking defeat.
