The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified the meanings of the “Not Admitted,” “Admission in Progress” and “Admitted” statuses displayed on candidates’ Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).
The Board explained the different stages in an explainer video shared on Thursday, urging candidates to regularly check their CAPS profiles as institutions continue with the admission process.
JAMB said candidates should not assume that the “Not Admitted” status means they have lost their chances of securing admission.
“This simply means you’ve not been offered admission yet. However, it does not necessarily mean you will not be admitted,” the Board said.
It advised candidates whose status remains “Not Admitted” to continue monitoring their CAPS profiles for possible changes.

On the “Admission in Progress” status, JAMB said it indicates that a candidate may have been recommended for admission by the institution, but the process is yet to be completed.
“This means your institution’s admission officer has proposed you for admission, but awaiting the head of institution’s recommendation,” it explained.
The Board added that the status could also appear after the head of the institution has recommended a candidate, but while the admission awaits JAMB’s approval or disapproval.
JAMB, however, warned candidates against regarding “Admission in Progress” as confirmation that they had secured admission.
“Please note that ‘Admission in Progress’ does not mean automatic admission,” the Board cautioned.
It explained that JAMB could still reject a recommended admission where a candidate failed to satisfy the required conditions.
“This is because the recommended offer could still be disapproved by the Board if you don’t meet the prerequisite requirements,” the Board stated.
According to JAMB, a candidate is officially considered admitted only after the Board approves the admission offer.
“This is the point you get the message, ‘CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED ADMISSION’,” it said.
Candidates who receive the official offer can then accept or reject the admission through the CAPS platform.
The Board also noted that CAPS statuses could change at different stages of the admission process and urged candidates not to treat an initial status as final.
“Remember, your CAPS status will keep changing as the admission process continues until the final stage where you print your admission letter,” JAMB said.
It advised candidates to check their CAPS profiles regularly and rely only on JAMB’s official communication channels for admission-related information.
