The Jigawa State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to investing in girl-child education as part of efforts to improve school attendance, retention, completion and learning outcomes across the state.

Governor Umar Namadi made the commitment in Jahun while flagging off the distribution of educational support materials to female students in secondary and nomadic schools across Jigawa.

The state government is distributing 48,300 school uniforms and 40,000 sanitary pads to female students in secondary schools across the state.

The intervention also includes 15,000 school bags, 4,000 sets of writing materials and 40,000 exercise books, aimed at reducing the financial burden on families and helping more girls remain in school.

Speaking at the event, Governor Namadi said his administration was giving greater attention to girl-child education because of its importance to the development of the state.

He said investment in education remains a major part of his administration’s development agenda, with government also focusing on school infrastructure, teacher quality, learning materials and inclusive education.

According to him, supporting girls’ education goes beyond providing school materials, as it can also improve their future opportunities and contribute to better outcomes for families and communities.

The governor said the intervention would be extended to other categories of learners as part of the government’s broader education support programme.

He disclosed that the state had awarded contracts for 22,500 school uniforms for junior secondary school students and 11,000 uniforms for nomadic schools, alongside other learning materials.

In addition, 3,800 uniforms will be provided for Almajiri pupils in integrated Tsangaya schools through the Tsangaya Education Board.

Governor Namadi said the objective is to combine Qur’anic and moral education with literacy, numeracy, life skills and preparation for productive citizenship.

He called on parents, teachers, traditional and religious leaders, school-based management committees, civil society organisations and development partners to support the initiative.

The governor stressed that providing educational materials alone cannot guarantee better learning outcomes, saying the commitment of families, dedication of teachers and support from communities are equally important.

With the intervention, the Jigawa government says it is strengthening support for girl-child education and vulnerable learners, with the broader goal of keeping more children in school and giving them a better chance of building a better future.

For many of the beneficiaries, the support means fewer education-related expenses for their families and easier access to essential materials needed to remain in school.
