The Kaduna State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting press freedom and supporting responsible journalism as the world commemorates the 2026 World Press Freedom Day.
The annual event, marked globally on May 3, is themed “Shaping a Future at Peace,” with this year’s reflections centred around the UNESCO conference in Lusaka, Zambia.
In a statement issued on behalf of the state government, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, said Governor Uba Sani remained committed to upholding the constitutional rights of journalists and creating an enabling environment for the media to operate freely and responsibly.
According to him, the administration recognises the critical role of the media in promoting peace, good governance, accountability and democratic stability.
“Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to press freedom reflects a firm belief that a free, responsible and credible media is indispensable to peace, good governance and democratic stability, as well as an informed and engaged society,” Mr Maiyaki stated.
He noted that the media continues to serve as a vital pillar of democracy in Nigeria and Kaduna State by informing citizens, shaping public discourse and holding leaders accountable.
Mr Maiyaki also warned against the growing threat posed by misinformation and disinformation, saying ethical and professional journalism has become more important than ever.
“As misinformation and disinformation threaten public trust and national cohesion, ethical, accurate and professional journalism remains non-negotiable, and Kaduna State will continue to protect journalists while promoting integrity and accountability in the media space,” he said.
The commissioner added that the state government would continue to strengthen collaboration with media organisations and stakeholders through capacity-building initiatives aimed at improving professionalism and combating fake news.
He further stressed the need to safeguard civic space and ensure journalists can carry out their duties without intimidation or undue interference.
The Kaduna State Government urged media practitioners and other stakeholders to uphold the principles of truth, responsibility and mutual respect, describing them as essential to building a peaceful, informed and democratic society.
