The Kano State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic New Year, 1st Muharram, 1448AH.
Naijaonpoint reports that the announcement was contained in a circular dated June 15, 2026, and issued by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the state.
According to the circular, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approved the holiday in recognition of the significance of the Islamic calendar and the state’s longstanding tradition of observing the commencement of the new Islamic year.
The circular stated that the public holiday would apply to all workers in the state.
“His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, has granted approval for tomorrow, Tuesday, 16th June, 2026 (1st Muharram, 1448AH), which marks the commencement of the Islamic New Year, to serve as a public holiday for all workers in the state,” the statement read.
The state government said the declaration was in line with Kano’s respect for Islamic values and its recognition of the importance of the Hijri calendar to Muslims across the state.
The government urged civil servants and residents to use the occasion for sober reflection and prayers.
It also called on the people of the state to pray for continued peace, stability, progress, and prosperity in Kano State and Nigeria at large.
The circular was signed by Safiyya Ali Suleiman, Director of Administration and General Services, on behalf of the Head of Civil Service.
Following the declaration, government offices and public institutions across Kano State are expected to remain closed on Tuesday.
The closure is to enable workers and residents to observe the beginning of the new Islamic year.
The Islamic New Year, also known as the Hijri New Year, marks the first day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
