The Kano State Government has signed contracts worth ₦21.29 billion with two Chinese construction companies for the rehabilitation of major water supply facilities across the state.
The projects involve the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa and Challawa water treatment plants as part of efforts to improve access to potable water and revive critical infrastructure in the state.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, on Wednesday.
SolaceBase reports that under the arrangement, CGC Nigeria Limited will handle the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant and restoration of the Raw Water Pump Station at the cost of ₦9.9 billion, while CCECC Nigeria Limited will execute the rehabilitation of the Challawa Raw Water Pump Station and Water Treatment Plant, including the restoration of the Goron Dutse Reservoirs, at the cost of ₦11.39 billion.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, expressed confidence in the capacity of the companies to deliver the projects according to specification and within the agreed eight-month timeline.
He said the rehabilitation of the facilities would significantly improve water production and distribution services, especially in metropolitan Kano and surrounding communities dependent on the affected plants.
Dr. Hashim noted that the projects formed part of the commitment of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration to addressing longstanding challenges in the state’s water sector and improving access to safe drinking water for residents.
Representatives of CGC and CCECC, who received their award letters during the event, assured the ministry of their readiness to complete the projects within the stipulated timeframe while maintaining quality standards.
The ministry also pledged strict supervision and monitoring of the projects to ensure transparency, accountability and successful execution.
