Kano teen inventor unveils AI-Powered farm robot to detect, eliminate crop pests

Kano-based teenage inventor, Khalifa Aminu, has developed an autonomous artificial intelligence-powered farm robot designed to help farmers detect crop pests and apply treatment automatically, marking another milestone in his growing list of homegrown technological innovations.

The latest invention, which is currently at the prototype stage, is capable of moving independently across farmland without human control. Using artificial intelligence, the robot identifies crop leaves, scans them for signs of pest infestation, and immediately sprays the affected plants with pesticides.

According to Khalifa, the robot continues its operation autonomously if no pests are detected, allowing farmers to monitor large farmlands more efficiently while reducing waste from indiscriminate pesticide application.

“This robot can move on its own, recognize leaves using AI, inspect them for pests, and instantly apply treatment when necessary. If there are no pests, it simply continues its journey,” he explained.

Khalifa said the project is still a prototype but expressed optimism that it could eventually reach international standards and attract support for mass production.

The invention adds to a growing portfolio of technological solutions developed by the young innovator, who has continued to gain attention for creating devices aimed at addressing societal challenges.

In previous interviews with SolaceBase, Khalifa revealed that he had built a Hausa-speaking artificial intelligence robot capable of detecting hazards such as fire, gas leaks, smoke, movement, heat and weather changes. The robot, known as KHALITECH BOT AI, communicates in Hausa and represents a significant step toward integrating indigenous languages into modern technology.

The teenage inventor also developed a machine capable of detecting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and solid minerals beneath the earth’s surface in less than a second, a device he said could provide an affordable local alternative to imported equipment.

Before those innovations, Khalifa gained national recognition for inventing sensor-equipped smart glasses designed to assist visually impaired persons in navigating obstacles through audio alerts, helping them move independently and safely.

Born and raised in Gobirawa quarters of Dala Local Government Area of Kano State, Khalifa has largely taught himself engineering and technology skills through online research, artificial intelligence tools, and practical experimentation. Despite facing financial and educational challenges, he has remained committed to developing locally driven technological solutions.

With his latest AI-powered agricultural robot, Khalifa is now turning his attention to improving farming productivity, demonstrating how indigenous innovation can contribute to food security and modern agriculture in Nigeria.

He said his long-term ambition is to refine the technology for large-scale production and position it for international markets.
