Kano, UK strengthen ties on education, healthcare, economic growth

Kano State  Government has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining development partnerships with the British High Commission following a high-level courtesy visit aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and reviewing ongoing projects under the UK-Kano Mutual Accountability Framework.

Governor Abba Yusuf on Tuesday received a delegation from the British High Commission led by Ms. Cynthia Rowe, Head of Development Cooperation, at the Government House in Kano.

Speaking during the visit, Rowe expressed appreciation to the government and people of Kano for the warm reception and reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to its strategic partnership with Nigeria and Kano State.

She explained that the UK is adopting a new international development strategy that places less emphasis on direct funding and greater focus on leveraging private sector investment, economic growth and multilateral partnerships.

According to her, future areas of cooperation will focus on economic growth through investment, security and stabilisation, as well as strengthening systems in education, agriculture and healthcare.

Responding on behalf of the governor, Deputy Governor Murtala Sule Garo commended the longstanding relationship between Kano State and the United Kingdom under the UK-Kano Development Partnership Framework.

Mr Garo said the state government highly values the support of the British High Commission in sectors that directly impact the lives of residents, including governance reforms, education, healthcare, economic development, institutional strengthening and social inclusion.

“We recognise that sustainable development can only be achieved through genuine partnerships built on trust, transparency and shared responsibility,” he said.

He noted that the engagement provided another opportunity for both parties to review progress, exchange ideas and reaffirm commitment to the Mutual Accountability Framework guiding their collaboration.

The deputy governor also expressed appreciation for the continued technical support and cooperation from the British High Commission, adding that the Kano State Government looks forward to strengthening the relationship for the benefit of citizens.
