Kanwan Katsina honoured for advancing nutrition programmes in Katsina

The Kanwan Katsina and District Head of Ketare, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara, has been honoured by the Nutritional Society of Nigeria in recognition of his contributions to the promotion of nutrition programmes in Katsina State.

The award was presented by the governor of Katsina state, Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda during the opening ceremony of the Society’s two-day annual workshop held in Katsina.

According to a statement issued by Kanwan Katsina’s Media Aide, Jamilu Hashimu Gora, the traditional ruler was recognised for his unwavering support for nutrition-related activities in Ketare District and across the state.

Speaking at the event, Governor Radda said his administration had prioritised investments in the health sector through the renovation and upgrading of hospitals and primary healthcare centres, recruitment of qualified health workers, and the provision of modern medical equipment to improve healthcare delivery.

The governor also announced that the state government had constituted a committee to oversee the Nutrition Centre at Kofar Sauri Nutrition Centre as part of efforts to strengthen interventions aimed at tackling child malnutrition in the state.

Responding after receiving the award, the Kanwan Katsina commended the Nutritional Society of Nigeria for its commitment to promoting good nutrition and urged the organisation to intensify public awareness campaigns on the importance of proper nutrition and healthy eating habits.

He called for increased use of radio and television programmes, social media, live streaming, flyers, and banners to educate the public on the role of good nutrition in disease prevention and improved health outcomes.

The workshop was attended by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Malam Abdulkadir Mamman Nasir, the Commissioner for Health, Musa Adamu Funtua, the General Manager of the Hospitals Services Management Board, Nazir Kurfi, the Vice-Chairman of the Northern States Chapter of the Nutritional Society of Nigeria, and other stakeholders in the health and nutrition sector.
