United States President John F. Kennedy and Nigeria’s Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, made history in 1963 when they held the first two-way satellite telephone conversation between heads of state.

The historic call was facilitated by Syncom 2, the world’s first geosynchronous communications satellite, linking the White House in Washington, D.C., with Balewa aboard the USNS Kingsport in Lagos Harbour.

The pioneering communication marked an important milestone in the history of telecommunications and further strengthened diplomatic ties between the United States and Nigeria.

It also demonstrated the potential of space technology for peaceful purposes and for bringing people and nations closer together across vast distances.

The historic exchange remains a notable chapter in the development of US-Nigeria relations and the early use of satellite technology for international communication.
