Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has defended the decision by the Anambra State Government to scrutinise the record of Peter Obi as governor, accusing critics of applying different standards to political candidates.
Keyamo made the remarks in a post via social media on Thursday, September 17, 2026, while reacting to the ongoing controversy over claims concerning Obi’s record in office.
The minister questioned why the records of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos State governor could be examined while similar scrutiny of Obi’s eight-year tenure in Anambra was being criticised.
“Hypocrites everywhere! It is okay to continue to scrutinise the records of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT as Governor of Lagos State 27 years ago, but it is abomination to scrutinise Peter Obi’s record as Governor 19 years ago! Yet, they are both running for the same office,” Keyamo wrote.

The controversy followed recent statements by the Anambra State Government concerning debts and other financial liabilities allegedly linked to Obi’s tenure. Obi has disputed the claims, insisting that he left office without outstanding obligations of the nature alleged.
Keyamo also questioned why the state government should not present its version of events, arguing that Obi’s record as a former governor could be subjected to public scrutiny as he seeks the presidency.
“How can someone question why the Anambra State Government is reeling out facts at this time? A Presidential candidate makes bogus claims as to his tenure as Governor, yet you don’t want him to be fact-checked? What type of hypocrisy is this?” he wrote.
The minister then praised Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo over the state government’s decision to present information about Obi’s tenure.
TVC News had earlier reported that the state Commissioner for Finance, Izuchukwu Okafor, disclosed that the Anambra State Government is still servicing loans obtained by previous administrations, including those of former governors Peter Obi and Willie Obiano.
Okafor said deductions were still being made from the state’s monthly federal allocation to service loans inherited from previous administrations.
“Every month during our FAAC meetings, when you see the schedule of FAAC, you will notice there are substantial, significant deductions from our own FAAC because of loans previously borrowed by previous administrations,” Okafor said.
“These loans were borrowed during the time of Peter Obi and Willie Obiano and other past governors.”
However, former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, challenged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to produce evidence that he left debts owed to contractors, suppliers, workers or pensioners when he left office.
Obi, in a video seen on social media, made the response to claims by the Anambra State Government that it is still servicing loans obtained by previous administrations, including his tenure and that of former Governor Willie Obiano.
“13 years ago I left office as Governor. On the day I left the office, I was not owing any pension, salaries and gratuities.. I didn’t owe any money that the Anambra State Government was supposed to pay. I did not owe a single supplier or contractor. If you find even one person I owed, I will end my 2027 campaign today,” Obi said.
