A Nigerian woman, Chioma Oniniwu, has withdrawn her allegation that Singapore-based Nigerian footballer Victor Ebele raped her, saying she was frightened and “took the law into my hands”.
Oniniwu made the retraction in a post on X following her arrest, court appearance and subsequent release on bail.
In 2025, she had publicly accused Ebele of rape and alleged that members of his family, including his mother and sister, harassed her after she sought justice.
She also accused Ebele’s brother, Frank Ebele, a professional footballer, of protecting him.
Oniniwu further alleged that police officers bullied her when she went to a police station to report the incident.
She was arrested on Wednesday, August 26, charged before a court and remanded before being granted bail.
Amid the legal proceedings, Oniniwu returned to X to withdraw the allegation and apologise to Ebele and his family.
“Victor Jr Ebele did not rape me, I was going through a difficult time and so frightened I took laws into my hands and wrongly accused him,” she wrote.
She added: “I recognise how this has affected not just him but his family and I am deeply sorry.”
The retraction comes after the allegation had circulated widely on social media and prompted public attention to the case.
Oniniwu also tagged the Federal Capital Territory Police Command in her post.
