The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has stepped up measures to curb the growing number of crashes involving dispatch riders on major roads across the state.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on Monday, the agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said fresh actions are underway to improve compliance with traffic regulations among riders.
He revealed that the authority has opened communication with unions representing dispatch riders as part of a broader safety campaign and enforcement drive.
“There are plans to convene a stakeholders’ engagement with courier service operators and riders to promote strict adherence to safety regulations.
“The engagement will focus on encouraging riders to prioritise not only the safety of other road users, but also their personal wellbeing,” he said.
Bakare-Oki stressed that the Lagos State Government remains resolute in its duty to protect lives and property through improved road safety measures.
He explained that the proposed forum would bring together unions, logistics firms and other stakeholders to tackle recurring safety concerns and strengthen observance of traffic laws.
The LASTMA chief also highlighted the agency’s school-based advocacy initiative, which is designed to instil road safety awareness and responsible conduct among young people.
According to him, the programme is a deliberate effort to shape attitudes early, noting that the agency is mandated to ensure safer roads by engaging the younger generation.
He added that between January and March, the initiative reached roughly 38 to 39 per cent of schools across Lagos State.
