A student of Lagos State University (LASU), Joseph Otabor, has died after sustaining injuries during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos State.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the university spokesperson, Olaniyi Jeariogbe, said Otabor, a student of the Department of History and International Studies, was attacked alongside his friends outside the campus on Friday night.
He was reportedly rushed to the hospital immediately after the incident but died on Tuesday while receiving treatment.
Jeariogbe said the university received the news of his death with “profound sadness”.
“Available information indicates that the unfortunate incident occurred off campus on the night of Friday, 29th May 2026, when the deceased and his friends were attacked by armed robbers,” the statement reads.
“Upon receiving reports of the incident, the University, through the Acting Dean, Students’ Affairs, Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, immediately provided support, escalated the matter to the Vice-Chancellor, and maintained contact with relevant medical personnel involved in his treatment.”
The statement added that the institution closely monitored his condition throughout his hospitalisation until his death.
It also noted that university representatives have been in touch with his family, officials of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, and law enforcement agencies.
“The University is actively cooperating with security agencies to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the attack are thoroughly investigated and those responsible are brought to justice,” it added.
LASU Vice-Chancellor, Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, also commiserated with the bereaved family, describing the loss as painful.
“On behalf of the Management, staff, students, and the entire University community, the Vice-Chancellor extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones of the deceased during this difficult and painful time,” the statement said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this tragic loss.”
The incident comes amid growing concern over a wave of violent attacks across parts of the South-West.
On Wednesday, gunmen abducted Olaide John-Paul, younger sister of former Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu, alongside her twin sons in Ibadan, Oyo State.
That same day, Asimiyu Ajibola, chairman of the Accord Party in Osun State, was shot by gunmen in Osogbo.
On Tuesday, the Oyo State Police Command said gunmen attacked the Nigeria Immigration Service passport office in Ogbomoso, carting away a rifle, ammunition and other valuables.
